[School] – Lewis Structure of PCl5

Post by FaytKHZ on Tue Nov 01, 2011 7:25 pm

Alrighty, so it appears that people are in High School Chemistry, learning Lewis Structures. Here I will show the rough draft of PCl5 (Phosphorus Pentachloride).

Take note that it was NOT done by me; Link did it.

Another thing to take note of is the fact that you have to use these steps:

  • Count the number of valence electrons; Group 1 elements have 1 valence, 2 has 2, 13 has 3, 14 has 4, 15 has 5, 16 has 6, 17 has 7, 18 has 8.
  • Draw skeletal structure; Hydrogen will NEVER be in the center due to how it can only bond with one other atom.
  • Put valence electrons as appropriate
  • Finish the placements and make bonds as needed
  • Fulfill octet and duet rules (duet in case of hydrogen)

Have the funs! This guide administered by Fayt and aided by Rebecca; November 1st 2011.

Great job, Fayt! Excellent! It seems that step by step drawing would help everyone out a LOT more though, that can be done.

You're gonna let Fayt teach you how to do this?
